Be CREATIVE: Shelter From the Storm

This professional development session serves as the kick-off to the “Be CREATIVE” series for the 2023-2024 academic year. In this session, we will discuss how the series will help faculty develop teaching strategies to provide shelter from the storms of stale course content, disengaged learners, and the prospect of generative AI. This series will focus on student-centered, inquiry-based learning and high-impact practices across the FSW curriculum. Regardless of your discipline or program, this series is for you!

Completion of all sessions in this series, while available as standalone workshops, will result in the total redesign of a faculty member’s course(s), regardless of modality. Faculty who complete at least four of the six sessions in this series will be awarded a badge and a “swag bag.”

Be CREATIVE: Students As Creators, Faculty As Mentors

The key word for this session is “agency.” As Cathy Davidson puts it, when a student has agency, she “sets out on an intellectual journey, finds her way through sources, happens upon the best methodology for finding evidence to support her argument, and then claims the final result—her discovery—as her own.” For faculty, sometimes giving up the power of showing and telling our content expertise is counterintuitive. However, evidence shows that student agency, including in introductory or general education courses, is a primary promotor of deep learning and of lifelong student interest. Join your colleagues for a facilitated discussion on this topic and leave with concrete pedagogical strategies and activities or assignments that promote student agency and empower students to engage in their own process of discovery to become knowledge creators.

Be CREATIVE: Cultivating Hunger

In “Getting Good,” Richard Russo says “Hunger has no business preceding ability, but it always does, with no exceptions.” In order to get good at something, you have to want. As faculty, we may struggle with getting students interested in our fields, as well as with a certain utilitarian view of knowledge itself. One way to overcome these challenges is to cultivate a good “hunger”, the key word for this session, so that students want to “get good” as a result of their own intrinsic motivations. Students will want to pursue an interest, even in the absence of ability. The question is, how do we harness that in our classes so that students will enthusiastically start their journey as informed knowledge creators? Join your colleagues for a facilitated discussion on this topic and leave with concrete pedagogical strategies and activities or assignments that promote student agency and empower students to pursue good hunger, on the way to “getting good.”

Be CREATIVE: PIVOT! PIVOT!

What do we do when things don’t go as planned? If students are creators and producers of knowledge, there are plenty of opportunities for missteps, mistakes, and outright failures. According to students, one of the most important characteristics of a faculty mentor on a project, besides knowledge and enthusiasm, is patience. Patience is the key word for this session! It is often difficult for us to remember our earliest days in our fields, where we were just learning how to speak the right language. How can we help our students create and produce, to have agency, while still providing the structure to fulfill our mission? How can we, as one of our colleagues in the sciences suggested, help our students arrive at a better understanding of the question? Join your colleagues for a facilitated discussion on this topic and leave with concrete pedagogical strategies and activities or assignments that promote student agency and empower students to engage in knowledge creation, especially in the face of setbacks and failures.

The Capstone Community of Practice will be held on the second Wednesday of every month from 2:00-3:00 PM. Please contact the Lead Faculty, Dr. Angus Cameron (angus.cameron@fsw.edu), for more information.
