First Generation

From First to Fearless

At Florida SouthWestern State College, we proudly recognize and celebrate our first-generation college students. Making up approximately 41% of our student population, these trailblazers are an integral part of the FSW community, enriching our campus culture with their unique perspectives, resilience, and contributions to academic and student life.

First-Generation College Student Definition

Florida SouthWestern State College defines a first-generation college student as one whose parent(s) or guardian(s) did not complete a four-year degree in the United States.

Students are still considered first-generation even if:

  • A sibling has graduated from a four-year university.
  • A parent or guardian attended community college and earned an associate degree.
  • A parent or guardian has taken college classes but did not earn a degree.
  • A parent or guardian earned a four-year degree outside of the United States.
