Biography
I grew up in Minnesota, and as the son of a social studies teacher and an English teacher, I love history, literature, film, and Broadway. I’m an amateur musician (guitar, bass, drums, singing) and I like to write poetry. I married my college sweetheart, and MaLeah and I have two rambunctious kids. After working in refugee resettlement for three years after college, I returned to graduate school to study American public address (studying US history through speeches). I’m an expert on congressional and presidential rhetoric, and I’ve published on the filibuster, conspiracy arguments, and stylized language. I’ve presented my work at a dozen national and regional conferences. My teaching philosophy/mantra is “empathy, humor, and rigor.” In my spare time, I enjoy swimming, camping, canoeing, golfing (regular, disc, mini), watching films, watching MN sports teams, and watching the great sport of curling all winter long.
