Medical History Museum at Edison State College now Open to the Public
The public is invited to visit the Medical History Museum at Edison Sate College, Room AA178 School of Nursing Building, 8099 College Parkway in Fort Myers (Park in Lots 1 or 2). Museum hours are Monday through Friday 10:00am- 2:00p.m. Admission is free.
“For all citizens, a deeper understanding of the present is enhanced through our medical history,” said Dr. Kenneth Walker District President of Edison State College. “It is our hope that the objects on display in the Medical History Museum will ignite learning for the area’s medical professionals, the students of Edison State College, and the community we serve.”
The Museum of Medical History provides historical displays depicting the practice of medicine, primarily in Southwest Florida, from the mid-1800s to the 1970s. Exhibits detail the progression of surgery, nursing, human prosthetics, therapeutic and diagnostic devices and patent medicines, and pharmaceutical artifacts.
Housed in a 1,800-square-foot gallery within the School of Nursing building on the Lee Campus, the Museum opened in November of 2010, culminating nearly two years of collaboration with its founders, surgeons Roger Scott, M.D., and Jacob Goldberger, M. D. Best known as Lee County’s first Board Certified Surgeon, Dr. Scott is now curator of the Medical History Museum.
"We have a sizable collection that will be of interest to anyone practicing in the various fields of medicine, as well as the general public,” he said. “After ten years of collecting, I am thrilled that we have found a permanent home within a state-of-the-art facility at Edison State College. We now have the opportunity to educate so many people through objects and artifacts that depict the history of medicine in general, and its progression in our own region.”
The Medical History Museum at Edison State College was dedicated to the memory of Dr. David Bernstein at a private reception in January. Dr. Scott and Dr. Goldberger, founders of the Medical History Museum unveiled a portrait of Dr. Bernstein which will become part of the Museum’s permanent collection.
