JDRF and Edison State College Host Research Seminar on Type 1 Diabetes

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and Edison State College will host an educational research seminar on type 1 diabetes.  Dr. Michael Haller, an acclaimed scientist from the University of Florida, will present current findings and future research avenues.

The Media and public are invited to attend. Dr. Haller will present the Community Research Update on Type 1 Diabetes on Thursday, February 10, at 7:00p.m. In room AA-177 (School of Nursing Building) at Edison State College, 8099 College Parkway in Fort Myers. Those interested in attending the free seminar should contact the Florida Suncoast Chapter of JDRF at (239) 992-3840. A “Meet the Researcher” reception will follow the presentation.

Daniel Kemp, a 14 year old who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 7 years ago, describes life with this disease:  “I walk a balance beam every day of my life trying to keep my blood sugar in a narrow range.  It is scary knowing that falling off the beam could cost me my life.  I just want to be a kid.”

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease affecting 1 of every 300 Americans.  In contrast to the common type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes is the more severe form of the disease and cannot be prevented.  Type 1 diabetes is rapidly rising- the incidence is expected to double every 20 years.

Dr. Haller’s research is focused on predicting, preventing, and reversing type 1 diabetes.  Haller is a highly acclaimed scientist who has received the Lawson Wilkins Clinical Scholar award, the Young Investigator Award from the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes, and the JDRF Early Career Clinically Oriented award to support his work in developing combination therapies for Type 1 diabetes. Along with Desmond Schatz and Mark Atkinson, Dr. Haller received the JDRF's highest award, the Mary Tyler Moore and S. Robert Levine Excellence in Clinical Research Award.

Dr. Asjad Khan and Dr. Caycee Jehiami, the only pediatric endocrinologists serving the type 1 population in Lee and surrounding counties, will be in attendance.

JDRF is the leading charitable funder of type 1 diabetes research worldwide.  JDRF has awarded more

than $1. 4 billion to support the mission of finding a cure for diabetes and its complications through

research.
