ECHS-Charlotte students win regional science fair

PUNTA GORDA – A pair of Edison Collegiate High School - Charlotte Campus students earned college scholarships for placing first at the 54th annual Thomas Alva Edison Kiwanis Science and Engineering Fair.

 

Sophomores Bethany Peacock and Eryne Phillips won the Animal Science category for their project “Osmotic Potential and Heart Rate in Daphnia magna.” Each of the 21 first-place winners received the Thomas Alva Edison Science Fair Scholarship, which funds the first year at Edison State College the fall following their high school graduation.

 

“The regional fair represents the best efforts of future scientists from the region, and we are extremely proud of the diligent work that produced these well-deserved honors,” ECHS chemistry teacher Blake Schmidt said. “Out of the five projects ECHS brought to the competition, four were recognized for being amongst the best in their respective category.”

 

Peacock and Phillips were among six Charlotte County representatives to be awarded first place. L.A. Ainger eighth-grader Elizabeth Ramsey, Charlotte Academy seventh-grader Delaney Gerofsky and Lemon Bay High freshmen Robert Marker and C.J. Deleon each won scholarships, as well.

 

Edison Collegiate High School also had a second place finish and two third-place projects. Helena Tracy earned second place in the Animal Science category for her project “Which Stimuli is More Attractive to Mosquitoes.” Gino Benedetto took third in Mathematics for his project “Hovercraft Equation: does it work?” Elizabeth Toth and Marissa Butcosk also took third in Microbiology for their project “Lights, Bacteria, Action.”
