Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease affecting 1 of every 300 Americans In contrast to the common type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes is the more severe form of the disease and cannot be prevented. Type 1 diabetes is rapidly rising- the incidence is expected to double every 20 years.
Daniel Kemp, a 14 year old who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 7 years ago describes life with this disease. “I walk a balance beam every day of my life trying to keep my blood sugar in a narrow range. It is scary knowing that falling off the beam could cost me my life. I just want to be a kid.”
Dr. Haller’s research is focused on predicting, preventing, and reversing type 1 diabetes. Haller is a highly acclaimed scientist who has received the Lawson Wilkins Clinical Scholar award, the Young Investigator Award from the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes, and the JDRF Early Career Clinically Oriented award to support his work in developing combination therapies for Type 1 diabetes.
