Rush Library Film Series: Free Screening of Prom Night in Mississippi and Discussion with the Award Winning Director and Producer

The final screening of the Rush Library Film Series at Edison State College will prove to be a climatic end to an extraordinary selection of films presented by the Rush Library this semester. The film is a modern day tale of segregation in America and will be followed by an interactive discussion with the film’s director and producer.

Reviews of the film are fantastic: “Prom Night in Mississippi is a film that is an excellent catalyst for reflection and is done with class and respect. We laughed and cried while watching this film.  The candid discussion with the producers and audience … caused us to look deep inside our souls and revisit different life situations we experienced or observed regarding prejudice and race.”  Dean Michael Morehead, Dean, College of Education, New Mexico State University

Prom Night in Mississippi

Prom Night in Mississippi chronicles the integration of a high school prom in a small Mississippi Delta town only two years ago. Until 2008, Mississippi’s Charleston High School had two proms: one for black students, and one for white students. Mississippi native and Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman is featured in the film because he paid for Charleston High School’s first integrated prom.  Award-winning Toronto-based filmmakers Paul Saltzman (director) and Patricia Aquino (producer) will present “Moving Beyond Prejudice” after each screening.

Screenings will be held in the Rush Auditorium, Building J at Edison State College, 8099 College Parkway in Fort Myers. The event is free and open to the public.
