Edison State College Welcomes New Lee Campus President
Edison State College is pleased to welcome the new Lee Campus President, Dr. James Martin. Dr. Martin is responsible for overseeing the operations of Edison State’s flagship campus in Lee County and brings many years of student –focused administrative experience to the position.
Dr. Martin joins Edison State after seven years of service at Pensacola Junior College, where he was Vice President of Student Affairs. Previous to PJC, he was employed by both two and four year colleges in administrative positions.
“As Lee Campus President, I encourage our campus faculty and staff to continue to be focused on academic success,” Martin said. “We have a top-notch faculty with a very important role in our community. We need to continue to provide academic excellence, a means for students to gain confidence, and the possibility to recognize an ultimate vocation.”
Dr. Martin understands the obstacles- real and perceived- to higher education. A first generation college graduate Martin was raised by his extended family. He says he is grateful that his desire to further his own education was supported.
“I am a confirmed believer that education is the only thing that will break the poverty cycle in this country,” Martin enthused. “I want everyone in our community to understand that an education is not an unrealistic dream. Edison State College can provide the support and the means to get you there. We are that opportunity.”
Dr. Martin intends to be an active proponent of student success in his new role. His objectives include reaching out to potential students, especially those in Lee’s socio-economically depressed communities, as well as spending as much time with current students as possible. He plans to meet regularly with the campus Student Government Association, and has already been spotted in the cafeteria joining students for lunch.
“I am proud to welcome Dr. James Martin to the position of Lee Campus President and feel that the attributes and skills he will bring to the College will complement the entire team,” said Dr. Kenneth Walker, President of Edison State College. “Dr. Martin is a long-standing professional in higher education with a true dedication to student success.”
