Charlotte Campus Tutoring Program Receives Recertification

Jun 14, 2010

The Charlotte Campus Academic Success Center’s Peer Tutoring program has been recertified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) for another three years. Taryn Mitchell supervises the Peer Tutoring program and successfully made application for the program’s initial certification a year ago and the current recertification. To date 14 tutors have received CRLA certification. Peer Tutors receive ten hours of tutor training and are then eligible for Tutor Certification after 25 hours of tutoring. The tutors receive training in tutoring techniques, communication, listening and questioning skills, and other aspects of effective tutoring. They also learn how to assist students with course content and learning strategies.

After a rigorous reapplication process and examination of the program, the CRLA said that the outcomes after just one year were very impressive and that the ideas implemented by the Charlotte ASC Peer Tutoring program were so good that they should be shared with other institutions as a help in their tutoring programs.

This free tutoring is provided in a variety of introductory and advanced courses for interested Edison State College students. Students who would like to sign up to meet with a peer tutor can stop by the Academic Success Center located in Building B 101. ASC summer hours are Monday through Thursday - 8:00 am- 6:00 pm and Friday - 8:00 am - 12:00 pm.
