The School of Education now has more than 300 teachers in its Mentor Teacher CoOp, all have applied and been accepted to serve as mentors for Edison State teacher candidates. Edison State College has an extremely intense and unique field experience program. The mentors host the teacher candidates in their classrooms, enabling Edison State College teacher candidates to begin experiencing activities in real classrooms from the beginning of their degree program. Ultimately, candidates must complete more than 560 hours of field experiences throughout their programs. Students must complete these hours in a range of different schools to ensure they are given diverse teaching experiences prior to graduating from Edison State College’s teacher education programs.

“This model of field experience is vastly different from those at other institutions and has proven to be very successful,” explained Dr. Erin Harrel, Associate Dean of the School of Education. “The Mentor Teacher CoOp is a very effective tool in preparing our students to become highly effective teachers.”

The School of Education at Edison State College awarded the first baccalaureate degrees to the class of 2010 in May. Edison State College graduates are now teachers in schools throughout the region.
