June 3, 2010 --- Between spiraling college costs and competition for seats in a freshman university class at an all time high, the road to college is often a stressful journey for both students and parents.
Dual enrolled student, Chanae Jamison, graduated in May 2009 with both a high school diploma and Associate in Arts degree. A two-year Edison State student, 18-year-old Jamison was the president of the Student Government Association and a member of Phi Theta Kappa (honor society).
“Through dual enrollment I have had the opportunity to get a head start on my career and form strong friendships with people from all different walks of life,” said Jamison. “I love the flexibility of the class schedule and the professors' willingness to help each student learn.”
Dual enrollment provides high school students with the opportunity to take college level courses, thus accelerating their college experience; for parents dual enrollment provides financial relief to the overall cost of college.
Edison State College is proud to serve 1,935 high school students participating in dual enrollment during the 2009-2010 academic year. Edison State College serves the southwest Florida five county of Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry, and Glades counties.
High school students who qualify for dual enrollment at Edison State do not pay for tuition, fees or books – no different than if they were attending traditional high school classes. They are enrolled as Edison State students and receive full college credit, as well as meeting high school requirements. Dual enrollment is open to public and private high school students and home schooled high school students who meet qualification requirements.
Other students such as Denielle Cox, a freshman at the University of Central Florida, participated in dual enrollment their junior and senior years of high school and then transitioned to other colleges and universities.
“Taking college courses my senior year at Edison State gave me a tremendous head start,” said Cox. “Just learning how to manage my time in college, registering for classes and understanding college expectations made all the difference when I hit the UCF campus.”
