Edison State College's HOPE Scholars Give Back to the Foundation
Apr 14, 2010
The President’s Scholarship Luncheon at Edison State College will feature an interesting twist this year. HOPE Scholars, all scholarship students themselves, will present a check to the Edison State College Foundation for $15,800.
The Media is invited to attend The President’s Scholarship Luncheon to be held Friday, April 16th, at noon in Taeni Hall (building S) room 106/107 on Edison State College, Lee Campus
Each year, the Edison State College Foundation hosts a scholarship lunch for donors and students. The luncheon is an opportunity for donors whom have established scholarships to visit with the student(s) that received their scholarship. Approximately 70 donors, ranging from individuals and representatives of corporations and local non-profits, will attend. The scholarships are awarded per a donor’s specifications, so attending students receive scholarships ranging from specific academic areas, financial needs, academic requirements, or specific interests.
Luncheon guests will enjoy an interesting presentation to the Foundation. Students in the Project HOPE Scholarship program at Edison State decided to give back to the college by saving all the monies they received for selling their books. Rather than pocketing the money as usual, the students decided as a group to donate the money back to the Foundation’s HOPE endowment. Campus bookstores have kept a tally of all designated book returns by HOPE Scholars, and the total is substantial. The HOPE Scholars will present the donation as a way to thank their donors and the College.
“This year, the HOPE Scholars decided they would take the opportunity to give back to the system that has significantly changed their lives,” explained Fred Morgan, Student Co-coordinator of the Project HOPE Scholarship program. “It’s their way of ensuring that other students will receive the benefits of the HOPE Program. We were thrilled when we realized the students would be able to contribute almost $16,000.”
HOPE Scholarships are administered by Edison State College’s Project HOPE (Help One Person Excel). Since the program launched in 1993, more than 1,200 students have received two-year tuition and book scholarships. The program's social and educational support network allows participants the opportunity to experience success, complete their college educations and become productive citizens. HOPE Scholars give back to the community through volunteer activities and mentoring.
