Apr 16, 2007

From classics to contemporary, patriotic to poetic, the spring concert by the Edison College Symphonic Orchestra and Chorale has something for everyone to enjoy. The Riverdale High School Chorus will also be part of the program.

Orchestra selections for the performance will include “La Belle Helene Overture” by Jacques Offenbach, “Symphony No. 1” by Ludwig van Beethoven, “Hoe-Down” from “Rodeo” by Aaron Copland, and the third movement of J. S. Bach’s “Concerto in A Minor” for violin and strings, featuring violin student Omar Ruiz-Lopez.

The Edison Chorale will present an “Americana” spring concert, with “Erie Canal,” “Appalachian Dances,” “Plenty Good Room,” “Elijah Rock,” “Set Down Servant” and “In that Rock.” The Riverdale High School Chorus will join the Edison Chorale for the final numbers. “Song of Democracy” is Howard Hanson’s chorale epic, with poetry by Walt Whitman.

The 45 members who make up the Edison College Symphonic Orchestra are both Edison College music students and talented community musicians from the five-county area served by Edison College. The orchestra is under the direction of Dr. Dennis Hill. The Edison Chorale is under the direction of Candace Baranowski-Sundby with accompaniment by Mary Griffin-Seal.

The spring concert is Sunday, April 22 at 3 p.m. in the Barbara Mann Performing Arts Hall on Edison’s Fort Myers campus. Everyone is invited to attend the concert, and complimentary tickets are available from orchestra and chorale members or at the Barbara Mann box office.
