Apr 12, 2007

Dr. Jeff Allbritten, president of Edison College’s Collier campus, has been elected president of the Florida Association of Community Colleges [FACC] for 2007. He took the helm recently to lead one of the state’s largest professional organizations.

As president of FACC, Allbritten guides the organization that represents more than one million students enrolled in community colleges across the state and more than 16,000 employees and retired employees.

“Dr. Allbritten brings his wisdom to the FACC board with his experience as a campus president of a community college,” said Michael Comins, FACC chief executive officer. “He has a vision and a passion for community colleges.”

FACC is one of the top three community college professional organizations in the nation. The Florida association’s mission is to actively promote, represent, support and serve their members and institutions in order to provide their students and the citizens of Florida with the best possible comprehensive community college educational system.

“It is a special recognition when your peers select you to lead,” said Edison District Executive Vice President and Lee Campus President Dr. Robert Jones. “The advocacy for additional resources for Edison College students and all of the 28 Florida community colleges is a critical role for FACC, and Jeff will be at the forefront.”

As an advocacy group, FACC’s lobbying arm focuses on policy setting which directly affects the state’s 28 community colleges.

During this Florida legislative session, FACC is backing measures such as continued support for the Educator Preparation Institute to accelerate the supply of high-quality certified teachers for Florida’s K-12 system; need-based financial aid assistance programs; public/private matching grant programs for student scholarships and academic program support; grants for workplace development programs; support for dual enrollment programs, and more.

“FACC is a very active organization,” said Allbritten. “I think that the best place for me to make the biggest difference in the lives of our students and staff is in government policies, where the foundation of all decisions begin and budgets are determined on a state level.”

Involved in FACC for the past eight years, Allbritten started at the local level serving on committees while working at Florida Community College at Jacksonville, then at Broward Community College in Ft. Lauderdale, prior to moving to southwest Florida.
