Celebrate “Guchi Day” in Honor of Edison State’s Inspirational Student Leader

Edison State College students have deemed Thursday October 29^th as Guchi Day on the Lee Campus. The designation is in honor of Student Council President and HOPE (Help One Person Succeed) Scholar, Guichard “Guchi” Jean- Louis, who was killed with his mother in an automobile accident last Spring.

Guchi Day will be marked with a special celebration of Guchi’s life on Thursday, October 29th from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Richard H. Rush Auditorium. The event will be held in the opening hour of the Edison State Open House on Lee Campus. Media is invited.  Students will honor the memory of Guchi through praise, dance, song, poetry, and tributes.

“Everyone wanted a chance to share memories of our friend Guchi” explained Fred Morgan, the faculty adviser to Hopes Scholars’ Club. “We want to keep Guchi and his values alive in our hearts, and remind everyone  of the importance of  education and service.”

After the program HOPE Scholars Club will sell hot dogs, chips  and  soda for $1.00 for the ESC Open House . Proceeds from the snack sale will be donated  to Guchi's family. The club has vowed to “adopt” Gucci’s family, as his father is now a single parent raising four children. They presented a check for $1089.00 to the family in the fall.

The Hope Scholar’s club is comprised of recipients of Edison State’s Project HOPE. Since the program was launched in 1993, over 1,200 students have received two-year tuition and book scholarships. The program's social and educational support network allows participants the opportunity to experience success, complete their college educations and become productive citizens. HOPE scholars give back to the community through volunteer activities and mentoring.
