Get your groove on with the Commodores this Saturday night! The 7th Annual Edison POPS at Sunset Concert will be held this Saturday, October 24th, with the 2009 headliner – The Commodores. The annual outdoor concert promises an exciting evening of live entertainment and is the College’s largest fundraising event.
“This year’s Pops at Sunset Concert is going to be very exciting! Legendary Motown recording artists, The Commodores, are one of the all-time great American bands, and in combination with the Edison Pops String Orchestra, it should prove to be an incredible evening of music and fun for all involved,” enthused Dr. Tom Smith, Conductor for the Edison State Pops String Orchestra and chair of the music Department at Edison State.
“The Pops Orchestra will begin the evening with an opening set of Pops favorites, including The Beatles Forever, The Orange Blossom Special, and A Tribute to The Armed Forces, among other selections,” said Smith. “Then the Pops String Orchestra will join the fabled Commodores onstage for the main event, featuring all the great Commodores hits that everyone around the world has come to know and love!”
All proceeds of this year’s concert will benefit scholarship assistance for displaced workers in Edison State College’s Adult Retraining Program. Edison State student enrollment has grown more than 24% over the past three years. The significant increase in enrollment is attributed to both the College’s open door policy and the number of people attending college in response to the recent economic downturn. Funds generated from this year’s concert are vitally important to the Adult Retraining Program, which is part of Rapid Recovery, an educational program conceived by Edison State College and the Southwest Florida Workforce Development Board.
The 2008 Edison POPS at Sunset Concert was a wonderful success, raising more than $40,000 for scholarships and academic assistance benefitting Edison State College students. The Edison State College Foundation hopes that this year’s event is a success for both the college and the community.
“Edison’s Pops at Sunset is our signature fundraising event for Edison State and with the Commodore’s headlining, it promises to be a really exciting evening! Our community has been through some tough times, and we see the Pops concert as a terrific place to relax, unwind and really enjoy a beautiful Southwest Florida evening,” explained Edward Kominowski Edison State College Foundation, Lee Campus.
