President's Award Presented to Dr. Wendy Chase

Aug 18, 2009

Southwest Florida -- Dr. Kenneth P. Walker, President of Edison State College Monday (August 17, 2009) presented Dr. Wendy Chase with the high honor of the “President’s Award” for her outstanding work as a professor and leader at Edison State College.

“Dr. Chase’s dedication and accomplishments in education and the arts are unparalleled in this community,” said Walker.  “She is highly respected by her colleagues and inspiring to her students.”

Chase is a Professor of Humanities who came to Southwest Florida and Edison State College five years ago.

In that time Dr. Chase has:

  • Organized and continues to serve as advisor to the College’s Film Society.

  • Served as Discipline Chair for the Humanities and Fine Arts for two years, during which time she was instrumental in curriculum revision projects as a result of Critical Thinking and SACS conferences she attended.

  • Paved the way for a full-time faculty member in Fine Arts and is an active member of the Cultural Committee, a group that is committed to the establishment of an arts district on the Lee Campus.

  • She is a member of the Black Maria Film Festival Committee, bringing this highly acclaimed event to Fort Myers for the last three years.

  • She is a member of the Public Art Committee for the City of Fort Myers.

  • She was an organizer of the Edison Era Film Festival, serving as one of its presenters.

  • She has taken a leadership role on the Holocaust Memorial Committee, arranging for guest speakers and serving as a presenter.

  • For the past two years, she has served as one of three judges for the High School Musical Awards that culminate with a well-attended presentation ceremony at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall.

“My experience has been particularly remarkable over the last year while every other institution seems to be drastically scaling back their support of the Arts, Edison State has remained committed to the spirit of the two guiding lights on our campus, Thomas Edison and Robert Rauschenberg,” said Chase.  “Edison State College is steadily increasing their support of innovation and creativity in all academic disciplines and I am quite grateful for the chance to work in this environment.

“For all of her achievement and ability she is genuinely humble,” said Walker.  “Her focus is squarely on her craft and her passion for the arts, never upon herself. She embodies all of the finest qualities that we strive to associate with Edison State College and its mission.”
