Higher Education Center Selects Edison State College to Participate in National Project

Aug 14, 2009

August 11, 2009 -- Edison State College District --- During the 2009-10 academic year Edison State College will participate in a national higher education project known as “Foundations of Excellence® in the First College Year.” The project, sponsored by the Policy Center on the First Year of College, will utilize a model of excellence for the first college year. This model can be used by colleges and universities to develop and refine their overall approach to educating first-year students.

“Research has long indicated that new students who are successfully integrated into college are much more likely to succeed,” said Dr. Kenneth P. Walker, President Edison State College. “Our goal is to ensure students who chose Edison State College are provided with the best practices available to set them up for long-term success.”

To introduce the “Foundations of Excellence®” to faculty and staff, Edison State College has invited the nation’s leading researcher on the topic, Executive Director for the Policy Center on the First Year of College, John N. Gardner, to speak at the Fall Convocation Ceremony.

Media is Invited to Attend:

Monday, August 17th – 9:00am

Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall

Dr. Gardner will be available for interviews at 10:20am

“Member institutions will measure their effectiveness in recruiting, admitting, orienting, supporting, advising, and teaching new students,” said Gardner.  “They will then be able to make programmatic improvements that will increase student learning, success, and persistence.”

Since February of 2003, the Foundations of Excellence project has involved more than 300 two- and four-year colleges and universities across the country in developing the standards (“Foundational Dimensions®”) which constitute a model first year. Edison State College will work with the Policy Center and its technology support and educational survey partner, Educational Benchmarking, Inc. in 2009-2010.
