Edison State College Purchases Administration Building near District Headquarters

Aug 6, 2009

The Edison State College Board of Trustees today unanimously approved (August 4, 2009) the purchase of the former Northern Trust Bank and Trust building on College Parkway.

“The close proximity to our district headquarters and the Lee Campus makes this particular building a logical fit for our immediate and long term plans,” said Dr. Kenneth Walker, President Edison State College.  “When we analyzed our options, to purchase this location or to construct a new administrative building, we found the purchase price to be the more cost and time effective choice for Edison State College.”

Enrollment at Edison State College has increased dramatically in the past several years.  The 2008-2009 academic year saw a 15 percent growth in enrollment.  Edison State administrator project the coming academic year will see similar growth.

As enrollment began to rise two years ago Edison State examined all class schedules to maximize the use classroom time.  The College added more classes at night and on the weekends to accommodate more students.  The Lee Campus is reaching maximum student capacity.

“We want to continue to welcome every student who wishes to pursue and education at Edison State.” said Walker. “To serve these students our infrastructure must support the growth.”

Right now administrators are considering various options for the new building with the goal of moving support systems to the new, nearby building and opening up more classrooms within the original Lee Campus site.

The site is located right across the street from Edison State’s, College Parkway entrance.   The Board of Trustees approved a purchase price of $1.8 million dollars.
