Pediatric Nursing Program Receives $50,000 Gift

May 5, 2009

Southwest Florida’s youngest residents will be the ultimate beneficiaries of a recent $50,000 gift to Edison State College’s Pediatric Nursing Program.

The donation, part of the proceeds from the recent 2009 Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest, will be used to help ensure Edison State nursing students continue to have access to the most recent equipment and knowledge available to provide the best pediatric care possible to young patients.  The donation comes during the construction of a new nursing building on the Lee Campus, which when open in the fall of 2010, will house a state-of-the art pediatric unit for training the nurses of tomorrow.

Many of Edison State’s nursing students opt to specialize in pediatric care and eventually work at The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, the primary recipient of this year’s Wine & Food Fest which received $600,000 from the event.

“Our children deserve the very best care and a nurturing and supportive environment when they fall ill,” said Lee Campus President Dr. Robert R. Jones.  “This wonderful relationship with The Children’s Hospital and the Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest enhances Edison State’s ability to train outstanding pediatric nurses who provide critical care to infants and children right here in our own community.”

The $50,000 gift from the Wine & Food Fest is eligible for matching funds through the state of Florida to provide scholarships for future nursing students, further extending the ultimate impact of the gift.
