Charlotte County – In fall of 2009 Edison State College will become home to an innovative new High School. The Charlotte County School Board Tuesday night (October 7, 2008) unanimously approved the application submitted by ESC to open a Collegiate High School on its Charlotte County campus.
The goal of the of the Collegiate High School is to graduate students in four years with both an Associate in Arts degree and a high school diploma.
"Simultaneously graduating with a high school diploma and a two-year college degree is a dream come true, and we are excited that it can happen," said Dr. Patricia Land, Edison State College’s Charlotte Campus President.
The Collegiate School offers an amazing cost savings for students. College-credit classes, textbooks, transportation, equipment and facilities will be available without cost to students.
"We hope to provide a world of possibilities to students who are highly motivated and those who otherwise may not have the opportunity to obtain a college degree," says Land. "By exposing capable young people to the collegiate environment early and giving them a positive start, we hope to attract students who are serious about their studies and mature enough to thrive in this challenging, but exciting, atmosphere."
An initial enrollment of 100 ninth graders is planned for 2009. An additional 100 freshmen will be accepted each year for a total enrollment capacity of 400 students. All Charlotte County students will be eligible for admission.
Currently, Edison State College is recruiting an experienced principal to lead this innovative school. Teachers and support staff positions will be posted later this year. Job announcements may be accessed at https://jobs.edison.edu.
Dr. Land says her team is in joint discussions to finalize the charter school agreement, with hopes to be concluded in December. The student application process will begin in January. Dr. Land said the school will open in the Fall of 2009.
A charter school is a public school run by a private group or individual. Charter schools receive state funding and are held to high academic standards. The advantage of a charter school is the greater flexibility allowed in developing the curriculum. ECHS projects small class sizes providing students with more individualized attention.
