Professor’s New Book Focuses on Dominance and Aggression

Apr 4, 2016

Dr. Henry Hermann’s new book, “The Great Game of Life, Dominance and Aggression in Humans and Other Animals,” demonstrates that mankind, although highly evolved, shares many of the same aggressive behaviors exhibited by wild animals.

A full-time Biology and Anatomy and Physiology professor on FSW’s Hendry/Glades Center for the last five years, Dr. Hermann recently finished the book and sent it to Elsevier Publishers for an anticipated late-2016 release.

Much of his research over the course of his academic career – including 30 years at the University of Georgia and nine years as an FSW adjunct instructor on the Thomas Edison (Lee) Campus – has been related to the issue of aggression and dominance in both humans and animals.

“The book has taken me years to do, eight to 10 years, maybe longer,” he explained. “It’s about humans and animals, and how they are the same, how they react to their environment and to each other. The process of aggression and dominance applies to our everyday lives.”

Some of Dr. Hermann’s other projects include “Social Insects” (1979-1982), which was well-received in the scientific community, followed by another book called “Defensive Mechanisms in Social Insects” and chapters in other books called “Sociality Defined,” “The Antiquity of Sociality,” “Defense Mechanisms in the Social Hymenoptera,” “Defensive Mechanisms: General Considerations and Self-Organization in Insects.”
