Apr 22, 2008

The Edison College Upward Bound Program proudly announces that Tasha Boileau was granted the Gates Millennium Scholarship in April. Dually enrolled at Fort Myers High School and Edison College, Boileau is the first student in the Edison College Upward Bound Program [ECUBP] history to receive this prestigious award. The scholarship covers the total cost of attendance for the college or university of Boileau's choice throughout her pursuit of a bachelor's, master's, and professional degree.

"We are all very proud of Tasha," said Paula Dailey, Upward Bound Director. "She has worked very hard at Fort Myers High and Edison College, and this is a great reward for her effort."

The Gates Millennium Scholarship Program helps students with a significant financial need fulfill their academic goals. Boileau comes from a low-income family and is the first to pursue her bachelor's degree, planning to enroll at the University of Florida this Fall. She has been a part of the ECUBP family for four years. "UB has made me work harder and helped me realize my goals," Boileau said. "It's given me an opportunity that I wouldn't have without it."

The primary goal of the ECUBP is to empower 50 eligible participants annually with the academic skills and motivation necessary for persistence and matriculation in secondary and post-secondary education. Upward Bound provides instruction in science, math, English, and foreign language. Students are provided a variety of academic support services during the regular academic year and complete an annual six week summer school program. This experience seeks to improve students' academic and social skills through classroom instruction as well as cultural and extra-curricular activities.

The ECUBP serves students who attend Fort Myers High School, East Lee County High School, Lehigh Senior High School, Riverdale High School, and Dunbar High School. For additional information, call [239] 489-9078.
