FSW Dental Hygiene and Online Programs Implement Paperless Grading System

Jul 30, 2015

JULY 30, 2015 – FORT MYERS, FLA – Two Florida SouthWestern State College (FSW) leaders recently presented at the InstructureCon national conference in Park City, Utah.

Karen Molumby, RDH, MBA, Dental Hygiene Program Director, and Dr. Mary Myers, Dean, Division of Teaching Innovation, Faculty Development, and Online Learning (FSW Online), presented the new paperless grading system they developed using Canvas, FSW’s online learning management system.

“For 14 years, we used a paper grading system for students in our dental hygiene clinics, totaling 3000 different forms,” Molumby said. “Students would be required to carry a binder with all of the papers and the clinical instructors would be required to approve them following completion of a clinical activity.”

Through Canvas, FSW Online was able to build 102 scoring rubrics. Using surface tablets and touchscreen monitors that were acquired through a Perkins fund, instructors in the dental hygiene clinic can now input student grades automatically.

“The system has helped eliminate lost papers and has helped us evaluate students’ performance more efficiently,” Molumby said. “Students are also able to automatically view their results, allowing them more time to focus on areas of improvement.”

“The paperless grading system provides great ease of access,” Dr. Myers said. “Everything saved in Canvas can be retrieved quickly and easily without the need to go back through files and paperwork.”

Currently, FSW has implemented the system in five of its dental hygiene clinical courses. It plans to have the system implemented in all 11 of its courses by the end of the academic year. This teaching innovation is one of the latest accolades for the FSW Dental Hygiene Program as the Class of 2015 just celebrated the 20th consecutive year of 100 percent pass rate on the National Dental Hygiene Board examination.
