Continuing the Tradition, FSW Student Elected to Serve FCSSGA for Third Year in a Row

May 29, 2015

MAY 29, 2015 – PUNTA GORDA, FLA. –Continuing its tradition of statewide student leaders, Florida SouthWestern State College (FSW) student John Giamanco was selected to serve as the Florida College System Student Government Association (FCSSGA) Vice President. This is the third year in a row an FSW student has been elected to serve FCSSGA by his fellow students from Florida’s 28 state and community colleges.

“It’s a great honor to serve the students of the 28 Florida state and community colleges,” said Giamanco. “I look forward to working with the students and all of the colleges on the issues that will affect us all.”

During his term as FCSSGA Vice President, Giamanco will advocate for a bill that provides financial aid for those students that don’t qualify.

“Because of income, some families are expected to contribute 100 percent for their children’s financial aid,” Giamanco said. “But because of many various factors, such as the number of children, some of those families are not able to contribute the full amount, so the entire cost of college falls on the student. I would like to do what I can to make financial aid available to all students.”

FCSSGA represents the nearly one million students enrolled in the Florida College System's 28 colleges. It promotes legislative advocacy and training, leadership development, service learning, promotion of campus activities, and strong citizenship. The organization was created to unify the member colleges in order to best attend to the appropriate concerns of the students of the Florida Community College system and serve as a vehicle to communicate these concerns to the Florida Legislative Body.

Giamanco was elected and sworn in during the FCSSGA conference in Tallahassee. He will begin serving his term on July 1.
