Edison State’s Joe Garita Receives Student Leader Award

MAY 19, 2014 – FORT MYERS, FLA. – Edison State College student Joe Garita recently received the Association of Florida Colleges (AFC) Student Leader Connection Award. The award honors a student that has contributed to the work of student development activities on his or her college campus.

Currently, Garita serves as the president of the Edison State College Creative Expressive Club and is the Florida College System Student Government Association FCSSGA Vice President. He is also the 2014-2015 FCSSGA President Elect.

“Joe’s contribution to our college and the community is priceless,” said Sue Buntic, interim Assistant Director, Student Life, Edison State College. “Our students benefit tremendously from his involvement, and his dedication and commitment to the college, the Student Government Association and our community has been truly inspiring.”

Garita has served as the president of Edison’s Phi Theta Kappa and was a founding member of Edison’s College-Wide Student Government Association (CWSGA). He pioneered and helped develop the peer architect position for the Quality Enhancement Program and also served on the Athletics Implementation Task Force Committee.

Garita volunteers his time presenting to numerous classes, serves as a spokesperson for the Edison State College Honors Program, and has completed over four hundred volunteer hours in just two years working with the Edison State College Collier Student Government Association, the American Heart Association, the Boys and Girls Club of SW Florida, the Lions Club of Bonita Springs, the Collier County Bloodmobile, the Abused Women’s and Children’s Shelter of Collier County and the Salvation Army.
