Florida College System Leaders Met at Edison State College

Aug 20, 2013

On July 25, 2013, leaders from seven of the 11 Initial Teacher Preparation (ITP’s) Units in the Florida College System met at Edison State College to discuss trends, best practices, standards, assessment and accreditation.  Each of the college leaders shared highlights of their programs, as well as challenges and successes with offering education preparation programs within the Florida College System. Deans and Directors shared data that demonstrate teacher candidates in these programs are becoming effective and/or highly effective teachers within our Florida k-12 schools.    Each of the participants shared success stories related to the number of graduates being hired in both Florida public and private Florida schools.

Matt Holliday, Director of Government Relations at Edison State College, gave an outstanding presentation on the legislative process and guidance on advocacy.  The group learned how the latest teacher preparation bill (HB 1664) moved through the legislative process and enjoyed learning how they can become more effective advocates for future legislation.

Of the ten participants, the majority rated the event as excellent! The group committed to meeting bi-annually with each of the colleges taking a turn as host site.
