Crime Scene Program Acquires New Technology

Aug 13, 2013

AUGUST 13, 2013 – FORT MYERS, FLA – Through the funding of a Perkins grant and the support of a generous donor, the Crime Scene Technology program at Edison State College recently acquired new technology that distinguishes the program from many others in the country.

The AFIX Automated Fingerprint Identification System can take an unknown fingerprint and match or partially match it to others in the system using computer algorithms. With the AFIX system, law enforcement can also take fingerprints using mobile devices, including cell phones, and enter physical and biographical information to help identify an unknown person or victim.

FARO is a 3D imaging system that when placed in the center of a room or crime scene, generates a laser pulse and beam that scans the room and collects information and measurements. It then creates a 3D rendering of the room to scale using specialized computer software. The rendering can reproduce the crime scene, determine where suspects and victims were standing, measure blood splatter, and determine angles where bullet rounds entered and exited the scene. The renderings can then be used as evidence in trials.

"Very few educational programs teach these technologies, but many law enforcement agencies use them,” said Dennis Fahey, professor, Criminal Justice, Edison State College. “Our students will gain an additional level of instruction that many entry-level crime scene technologists do not have.”

The program will begin using the new technology in its classes in 2014. For more information about the Crime Scene Technology program at Edison State College, contact the School of Business and Technology, at 239- 489-9270.
