MAY 16, 2013 – FORT MYERS, FLA – Film buffs from around the world will soon convene in France at the Cannes Film Festival May 15-26, and when they do, Edison State College will be one of the stars.
Edison State College Fine Art Photography Adjunct Instructor Steve Chase will present his short film “When You Feel Love” during the international film festival this month. The 25-minute film, shot in various locations throughout Fort Myers, including the Rauschenberg Gallery at the Edison State College Lee Campus, tells the story of a young man following his breakup with his girlfriend.
The film stars current Edison State College student Jed Krause and former Edison student Willie Filkowski. Edison State College alumnus Michael Grodum worked as the film’s cinematographer and Edison Library Learning Resources Assistant Chris Ludvigsen composed the film’s music.
Chase had been working on another film when the idea for “When You Feel Love” came to him, and he pulled together this select group of cast and crew.
“I’d known all of these guys from their performances and work at the college and was impressed by their abilities,” Chase said. “I knew it would be a great group to work with.”
Chase is the creator of Mind’s Eye Films, in which he has produced narrative and documentary films for various organizations. Some of his work has been screened at various film festivals in the past, but this is the first time he’s entered the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
“I am happy it is being considered,” Chase said. “I entered because I thought it would be interesting just to see what would happen. I was really surprised when I received the email saying it had been accepted.”
Ludvigsen, who composed the music for the film in his living room, is also surprised at the film’s success.
“It’s amazing,” he said. “I came on before there was any talk of film festivals, and I was just doing something fun with a friend. It all happened so quickly. I don’t think I’ve really processed it yet, being a part of something that’s become so big.”
“When You Feel Love” will be showcased in the Cannes Film Festival’s Short Film Corner, a special grouping that allows festival attendees to view the films through a digital film library, exposing the films to industry professionals and film buyers.
Chase and Ludvigsen will attend the festival, and Chase hopes he can gain some industry interest.
“My ultimate goal for this film is to stream it on an online film outlet so that it is available to an even greater audience,” Chase said. “But whatever may come out of this, it is still an incredible experience for all of us involved.”
