May 2, 2013
Edison State College Professor, Dr. Mireille Lauture, recently released her fifth published book. This book, Konpè kochon pran nan mera / The Suspicious Pig, falls within a series of books that are aimed towards children, who can read them in English or Creole. Additionally, each story not only entertains, but educates and instills moral values on various life lessons that children can relate to in any culture.
In Konpè kochon pran nan mera / The Suspicious Pig, the story follows as many animals go to a party to have fun but things turn sour for the main character, Mr. Pig, acts without thinking. After reading this, children will not only walk away entertained, but will have taken a glimpse into the Haitian culture while learning valuable lessons.
“During my childhood years in Haiti, folktales were orally passed on from generation to generation. At that time, Haitian Creole was only a spoken language which means that none of those stories could be documented with their authenticity in our literature,” said Dr. Mireille Lauture, EAP Transition Program Specialist in the Division of College and Career Readiness, Edison State College. “When Haitian Creole became a full-fledged language with syntax and grammar, I decided to record some of the stories that my mom used to narrate during my childhood years and pass them on to the next generation. My overall goal is to contribute to the language development of children around the world.” Dr. Lauture’s books can be purchased at amazon.com.
