Edison State College to Celebrate Spring 2012 Commencement
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Edison State College will celebrate Spring Commencement at a bigger venue this year with a prominent graduation speaker as the college celebrates its 50th anniversary.
Porter Goss, former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, will address hundreds of students from the Lee Campus and the Hendry/Glades Center at the Germain Arena Friday evening.
More than 850 students will graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree, Associate in Arts Degree, Associates in Science Degree and a Certificate. In honor of the college’s 50th anniversary, it will also recognize nine distinguished alumni who attended Edison State throughout its five decades of service:
Dr. Sandra Lepley - 1968, administrator, Richard Milburn Academy
Holly Jeffcoat - 1972, internationally renowned artist
The Hon. Archie B. Hayward Jr. - 1978, Judge, Lee County Court
Donna Poland - 1987, elementary math teacher, Lee County Public Schools
Tyra N. Read - 1996, attorney at law, Henderson Franklin
Maria Cardenas - 1999, third-grade teacher, Lee County Public Schools
Matthew Holliday - 2001, director, government relations, Edison State College
Matthew Soud - 2002, underwriter First Bank
Stefanie Ink - 2006, Alliance Financial Group
Other commencement profiles:
Ron Temple, 41, grew up in rural Louisiana and spent his teenage years in a foster home. He returned to Edison State in 2008 “scared of college.” He earned a 4.0 in his first semester and never turned back. Ron garnered a long list of awards and honors including Who’s Who Among Students of American Universities and Colleges and All Florida Academic Team. He earned the James Newton Leadership Scholarship award and was placed on the Dean’s List four times. Ron will receive and Associate in Arts Degree and continue his education at Florida Gulf Coast University.
HOPE Scholars: Project HOPE celebrates its 20th year at Edison State College.
The program, which began in 1992, has helped hundreds of students who never dreamed of attending college, graduate with a degree. Two prominent HOPE scholars graduate from the Lee Campus. Crystal Perez, president of the Student Government Association and vice-president, Daisy Casas, will both earn Associate in Arts Degrees.
The 2012 Spring Commencement Ceremony will be held Friday, May 4. The ceremony begins at 6 p.m. and doors open at 4:30 p.m. Media is invited to attend.
