Edison State launches Spanish-language Facebook page
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Edison State College’s commitment to serving the Hispanic population throughout Southwest Florida took a significant step forward this week with the launch of Facebook.com/EdisonStateEspanol.
With Hispanic students accounting for about 20 percent of Edison State’s district-wide enrollment, the Spanish-language page provides another wonderful resource for those students, their families and the entire Hispanic community.
“Edison State College is proud to serve all of Southwest Florida, and the Hispanic population is an extremely important and substantial element to our community,” said Dr. Kenneth P. Walker, District President.
The Facebook page comes on the heels of Edison State appointing Alvaro Dufflar to the position of Hispanic Outreach Coordinator. Dufflar is responsible for helping students maximize their educational experiences and future job opportunities.
Edison State’s district-wide fall enrollment is 16,951 with Hispanic students accounting for 3,424, or 20.2 percent. Just 10 years ago that figure was only 5.7 percent, or 509 out of 8,919 district-wide.
“Edison State already has a strong social media presence on Facebook, so adding a Spanish-language page was important,” Dufflar said. “The page gives Hispanic students a forum where they will feel comfortable and take ownership. It will be a great place to connect both within Edison State and throughout Southwest Florida.”
