Edison Collegiate High School - Lee Campus Students Sweep Awards for the Florida Bar 2011 YouTube Contest
Students at Edison Collegiate High School – Lee Campus will celebrate their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winning teams in the 2011 Law Day YouTube contest. The statewide contest is part of the Florida Bar’s annual Law Day celebration and was created as a means to get students interested in the law by using one of today’s leading social networks.
The media is invited to attend the award presentation and video screening at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, June 6th in the new Edison Collegiate High School cafeteria (Building T), on the Lee campus of Edison State College 8099 College Parkway in Fort Myers (parking Lot 5). A representative from the Florida Bar and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office will speak with the students. The event also marks the first day that the newly constructed wing of the high school will be open to students, faculty and staff.
Edison Collegiate High School – Lee campus students swept the YouTube contest’s top three awards. Dion Hancock, a Tampa-based attorney and representative of the Florida Bar Law Related Education Committee that sponsored the YouTube contest, will present a $500.00 prize to the first place team and $250.00 to the 2nd place winners. Hancock will also present certificates to all the winning team members. The winning videos are posted on the Florida Bar’s website. The winning teams are: 1st Place awarded to Hailey Queen, Emma Vieira and Meredith Rodrigues; 2nd Place awarded to Steven Starnes, Evan Stevens, Griffin Gassner, Chris Guido and Peter Smith; 3rd Place awarded to Evelyn Arroyo, Alexa Brandstetter and Jose Sanchez.
“I was very surprised- and excited- to win! We get to do so many creative things at school! We were coming up with ideas in Career class, made up a rap, and then we just started improving from there,” explained Emma Vieira, a member of the first-place team.
2011 YouTube Contest was based on the Legal Guide for New Adults pamphlet that is promoted by The Florida Bar’s Law Related Education Committee. Students were challenged to make a video about any of the topics in the pamphlet. The contest was created as a means to promote interest in the law through research, participation and ingenuity. Edison State Collegiate High teacher Heather Olson saw the contest as a fun motivating tool for her students:
“The Florida Bar’s YouTube contest was a great opportunity for our Career class. We were able to incorporate so many elements- shooting and editing video, working in small groups, researching and presenting on a subject. Winning was a shock- I had no idea we would actually win!”
